Ethiopia gets USD 3.63 billion from remittances sent via the state owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) until the third quarter of the budget year, a statement the bank sent to Capital said.
The hard currency the country secures from remittance is growing significantly from time to time. Some studies indicated that remittance sent from oversees has become the major hard currency sources for the country than revenues earned from direct international trade or export.
The hard currency earned in the first nine months of the current fiscal year by CBE, is higher than the country’s annual export revenue generated in the past fiscal year or from the projected revenue for the current year. For instance, in the past nine months, the hard currency that was earned from international trade by CBE was USD 756.1 million.
CBE’s foreign exchange earnings in the past three quarters stood at over USD 4.4 billion.
In the 2013/14 fiscal year, the bank has gained USD 5.5 billion from foreign exchange, which is higher by USD 1.1 billion compared with the three quarters achievement in the current budget year.
The nine month performance evaluation the bank’s management conducted a week ago indicated that CBE has earned 9.05 billion birr gross profit, and the total revenue for the stated period has reached close to 16 billion birr. In the past fiscal year of 2013/14, the bank has earned 9.7 billion birr gross profit and a revenue of 17.2 billion birr.
Deposit mobilization capacity of CBE at the end of the third quarter is 27.5 billion birr and total deposits reached 220.8 billion birr.
On the interest free saving, the number of account holders reached 69,217 and the saving amount has reached 807 million birr.
To expand extensively its service, the bank has opened additional 107 new branches in different parts of the country increasing the number of branches to 939 by the end of the third quarter.
CBE mobilizes 1.1 billion birr from the new branches, while 1.9 million new depositors are included on the bank’s customers’ lists making the total number of depositors 10.1 million.
The bank has a target of increasing its branches to 1,000 at the end of the fiscal year in July 2015.
In the stated period, the bank also dispersed about 63 billion birr in loan and bond sales.
The bank that has 627 Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) in different parts of the country has made 11.1 million transactions that are worth 9.6 billion birr, and a foreign exchange service cashing USD 33 million.
228,903 transactions involving 553 million birr were undertaken by 1,162 Point of Sell (PoS), while 144,588 clients are using mobile banking, which is the latest banking service for the country.
Currently, 809 branches are connected with the T-24 core banking solution system, with additional 178 branches being included on the system in the past nine months.
According to the report, the bank’s asset has reached 276.3 billion birr, which has been 242.7 billion birr in the past fiscal year.
CBE has also signed an agreement with the Chinese construction company, China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), to construct a 46-storey building at the heart of the capital in the so called financial district.

More than 50 Oromo students arrested by Ethiopia’s TPLF regime in Ambo, Oromia; 20 being tortured

The following is a statement from the Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA)
Ethiopia: The Endless Violence against Oromo Nationals Continues
Fear of Torture | HRLHA Urgent Action
For Immediate Release
May 7, 2015
Harassment and intimidation through arbitrary arrests, kidnappings and disappearances have continued unabated in Ambo and the surrounding areas against Oromo youth and intellectuals since the crackdown of last year (April 2014), when more than 79 Oromos, mostly youth, were killed by members of the federal security force.
According to HRLHA correspondents in Ambo, the major targets of this most recent government-sponsored violence were Ambo University and high schools Oromo students in Ambo town. In this incident, which started on April 20, 2015, more than 50 university and high school students were arrested; more than 20 were severely beaten by the security force and taken to the Ambo General Hospital for treatment.
Although it has been difficult to identify everyone by their names, HRLHA correspondents have confirmed that the following were among the arrestees:

According to HRLHA reporters, the arrests were made to clear out supporters and members of the other political organizations running for the 5th General Election to be held May 24, 2015. The EPRDF, led by the late Meles Zenawi, claimed victory in the General Elections of 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010. The TPLF/EPRDF government of Ethiopia has started a campaign of intimidation against its opponents. Extrajudicial arrests and imprisonments, particularly in the regional state of Oromia, the most populous region in the country, began late October 2014.
The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) expresses its deep concern over the safety and well-being of these Oromo nationals who have been arrested without any court warrant, and are being held at police stations and unknown detention centers. The Ethiopian government has a well documented record of gross and flagrant violations of human rights, including the torturing of its own citizens, who were suspected of supporting, sympathizing with and/or being members of the opposition political organizations. There have been credible reports of physical and psychological abuses committed against individuals in Ethiopia’s official prisons and other secret detention centers.
HRLHA calls upon governments of the West, all local, regional and international human rights agencies to join hands and demand the immediate halt to such extrajudicial actions against one’s own citizens, and the unconditional release of the detainees.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send appeals to the Ethiopian Government and its officials as swiftly as possible, written in English, Ahmaric, or your own language. The following are suggested:
– Indicate your concern about citizens being tortured in different detention centers, including the infamous Ma’ikelawi Central Investigation Office; and calling for their immediate and unconditional release;
– Urge the Ethiopian authorities to ensure that detainees will be treated in accordance with the regional and international standards on the treatment of prisoners, and that their whereabouts be disclosed, and
– Make sure the coming May 24, 2015 election is fair and free

Why Ethiopian Israelis took to the streets in Tel Aviv

A historically disadvantaged black minority is galvanized when one of its members appears to suffer brutality at the hands of police, and the episode is caught on video. Peaceful mass protests devolve into violence. Police crack down in an attempt to control crowds.
It’s not Baltimore or Ferguson. It’s Tel Aviv, which was rocked by unrest on May 3 after a video went viral showing a uniformed Ethiopian Israeli soldier, Demas Pakada, being beaten by Israeli police. Here are four things you need to know about the Israeli demonstrations:
1) A police beating sparked the protests.
The video that triggered the Tel Aviv protests shows Pakada holding his bicycle on an empty sidewalk. A police officer approaches him, grabs him, punches him and pushes him to the ground. Pakada then stands up and exchanges words with the officer.

Chanting May 3 in Tel Aviv, protesters invoked the name of Yosef Salamsa,  a 22-year-old Ethiopian Israeli man who committed suicide in July. Salamsa killed himself four months after police approached him in a public park and accused him of breaking into a house, then shocked him with a Taser before releasing him. Shlomi Salame, the deputy mayor of Salamsa’s coastal hometown of Binyamina, said the police “broke his spirit,” according to the Israeli news website Walla.
But unlike in the United States, where a series of high-profile law enforcement killings of unarmed black boys and men have made headlines, until now there have been no known parallel cases with Ethiopians in Israel.
On May 4, Pakada met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with a delegation of Ethiopian Israeli community leaders.
2) The protests are also responding to Ethiopians’ systemic challenges.
Pakada’s beating triggered the protests, including in Jerusalem several days earlier, but it also unleashed long-simmering grievances in the Ethiopian community. Protesters said they were troubled by lagging educational opportunities, discrimination when applying for government jobs and high rates of Ethiopian Israelis in military prisons.
Israel has celebrated the approximately 135,500 Ethiopian Jews in Israel; 85,900 arrived between the mid-1980s and 2013. And Israel’s government has provided a range of benefits to Ethiopian Israelis, from free college tuition to lower mortgage rates. But challenges remain.
Ethiopian Israelis are overrepresented in military prisons and underrepresented at the nation’s universities. Plus, the average Ethiopian family’s income is 50 percent lower than the Israeli average.
“We want to receive rights just as we fulfill our duties,” said Yosi Minyuv, 27, an Ethiopian Israeli who served four years in the Israeli army, including as a combat officer. “We’re second-class citizens. We want good work and they block us.”
3) The Tel Aviv demonstration began peacefully and ended in violence.
When protesters — Ethiopian and others — first gathered in Tel Aviv, they chanted and held signs as police stood at a distance. As the protest swelled beyond 1,000 people, the demonstrators formed a giant circle, blocking a major intersection and then marching down Tel Aviv’s central Ayalon highway.
Israeli police try to disperse the demonstrators.

Protesters chanted slogans like “Whether black or white, we’re all people” and “Every violent police officer needs to be put away.” They held signs with slogans such as “Being black is not a crime.” Some waved Israeli flags.
Clashes began as police cleared protesters from the highway, and violence intensified as more demonstrators filled the central Rabin Square. Fighting escalated as protesters threw glass bottles and stones at police, and police responded with stun grenades and a water cannon. Demonstrators began to chant “police state” and remained past midnight.
By the time the crowds dispersed, dozens of people had been injured, including 56 police officers. Blood stained the usually tranquil square.
4) Despite challenges, some Ethiopian Israelis remain optimistic.
Even as protesters vented frustrations, many of them said they felt a sense of belonging in Israel. A large Israeli flag waved over the demonstration’s early hours, and Ethiopian Israelis at the protest proudly referenced their military service. Protesters said that after serving in the Israel Defense Forces and living in the state as loyal citizens, they didn’t feel the state treated them as they deserved.
“I gave to the state because I’m part of the country,” said Avi Sabahat, 27, who immigrated from Ethiopia at age 4. “There’s some hidden discrimination. It’s in the conscious and the subconscious. There’s been a little improvement, but you don’t feel it. There’s integration in society, but not enough.”
Dana Sibaho, a 29-year-old Ethiopian Israeli, said that a decade ago, the older generation, who had come to Israel as adults, was too focused on absorption to demand better treatment from the state. But she said younger Ethiopians, either born in Israel or having arrived as small children, feel empowered to demand their rights.
“Things will change,” she said. “They won’t silence us. Not like our parents, who accepted things. We know what we’re up against. Now we won’t shut up.”
