Meetings of Sudanese and South Sudanese officials are ongoing in Addis Ababa under the auspices of the African Union Border Program. The meetings are about implementation of the 2012 Cooperation Agreement between the two countries.
The AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ismail Chergui met South Sudan’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Michael Makuei Lueth and State Minister at the Sudanese Presidency Al-Rashid Haroun in Addis Ababa.
The two Sudans still have disputes over areas that include Abyei, 14-Mile area, Joudat Al-Fakhar, Jebel al-Megenis, Kaka, and Kafia Kingi enclave (Hofrat al-Nihas).
In a statement, the AU commissioner stressed the importance of building on the current momentum between the two countries in order to give more impetus to peace efforts in the region.
Chergui further said the positive atmosphere at the meeting and the cooperation between the two parties with the AU commissioner including the commitment of their respective governments will push for the demarcation of the common borders between both countries.
